Downhole measurement tools offering new perspectives...
Improving drilling performances and/or drilling efficiency is one of the main current challenge for the oil & gaz industry. In that context, a good understanding of the different mechanisms occuring while drilling is of prime importance. As a good decision process relies implicitely on various quality measurements.
Although rigs are usually instrumented (hook position, reactive torque, weigth on hook, rotational speed, mud flow, mud density,...), these measurement devices are located at thousand meters above the drilling action of drill bits. Those data are therefore most of the time polluted by the action of numerous tools inserted in the drillstring, the elastic drillstring acting as a mechanical filter and non linear contacts occuring between the drillstring and the borehole. Interpretation of the surface data only can greatly mislead decisions causing unjustified high costs.
Thanks to recent improvements made on electronics (low power consumption, accurate in high temperature and pressure environements), the industry has developped several donwhole instrumented tools capable of recording at high sampling rates multiple dynamical quantities at reasonable costs. Here is list of a few of them (contact each supplier for more information):
CoPilot developped by Baker
The copilot is a multi-sensor data acquisition and processing dynamics tool of 2.3 meters long.
It monitor simultaneously 14 different sensors @ 1000 Hz
The sensors are:
- accelerometers
- magnetometers
- strain gauges: compression, torque, bending
- annular & bore pressure and temperature
A downhole processor analyze the data and send in real time averaged information about downhole weight on bit, torque, bending, whirling, bouncing, stick-slip and pressure.
EcoScope developped by Schlumberger
The EcoScope is a multifunction formation evaluation tool.
It's a logging tool (porosity, sigma, neutron, sonic, density, gamma, caliper) combined with a drilling dynamics measurement (shocks, rotation speed, inclinaison, azimuth).
Measurement can be send to the surface in realtime if combined with TeleScope technology.
Isub developped by Diamant Drilling Services and deployed by Maxwell Downhole technology
The Instrumented Sub has been developped as short as possible (+/-30cm length) to be placed right above the bit.
This recording tool focus on drilling process and drilling dynamics.
Several measures are recorded at 50Hz in a 500Mb memory:
- 3axis inclinaison
- 2 magnetometers (X & Y)
- 5 accelrometers (X+, X-, Y+, Y-, Z)
- 4 strain gauges: compression, torque, bend (X & Y)
BlackBox developped by Reed Hycalo
![]()
The BlaclBox focus on lateral vibrations with a unique lateral accelerometer.
This very short recording tool can be placed right above the bit.
I-Con developped by I-Tec
The I-Con is very similar to the Isub except that the bending strain gauge is replaced by a pressure sensor.
