Drilling Response Efficiency Automated Monitoring

And if a drilling bit was a downhole scratcher...

To optimize the drilling operations of boreholes, the industry has developed downhole tools capable of recording at high sampling rate many different dynamical quantities such as WOB, TOB, RPM, and lateral accelerations among others. Combined with surface data, these measurements offer new perspectives to understand phenomena initiated at thousands of meters below the ground surface.

 

The interpretation of drilling data is very challenging because it covers large range of engineering sciences from the most fundamental (multiple time and length scales problems, non linear dynamics involved) to the most practical ones. The team developping the DREAM project is composed by five high qualified but pragmatic field experienced scientists specialized in Signal processing, Rock cutting mechanics, Bit-rock interaction modeling, Geomechanics, Data acquisition, Non linear dynamics, Civil engineering, Drilling data interpretation.

APPLICATIONS

The integrated package of toolboxes included in the DREAM software helps the operator to monitor easily and efficiently the drilling operational quality and the drilling dynamics by integrating robust bit/rock interaction models. The operator has the possibility to focus on different aspects such as:
       - The power transmission efficiency evaluation between surface and downhole;
       - The weight transmission efficiency evaluation between surface and downhole;
       - The type and magnitude of vibrations (stick-slip, whirling, bit boucing,...) occurring downhole;
       - The amplitude of the vibrations versus drilling parameters relationship study;
       - The drill bit efficiency;
       - Undesired event detection such as bit balling or cleaning issues;
       - Rock mechanical properties estimation
       - Reverse rotation detection
       - ...

Other applications are also possible such as:
- wind velocity and direction study (for wind turbine park optimization)

DREAM KEY FEATURES

Dream is composed by a general platform with basic features and several toolboxes. The key features are:

  • Possibility to use multiple databases;
  • Data processing is divided in four different phases to (i) import the raw data, (ii) synchronize, calibrate and validate the data coming from different sources, (iii) analyze the validated data set and (iv) report the results;
  • An intuitive interface gives a direct overview of every analysis previously saved;
  • Analysis tools are available to vizualize and interpret the drilling dynamics in the time or frequency domains;
  • Advanced bit/rock interaction toolboxes allow to estimate some rock properties and bit characteristics.
  • Exporting data, pictures or movies is done easily.
